“I want”: The audacious act of creating an annual vision & plan.

What could be more audacious than proclaiming a future you want to unfold?

“This is what I want.”

Visioning and planning sounds simple, but what an emotional hotbed.

Here’s how it goes down for me - can you relate?

I set the stage.  It’s planning time. I’m nestled into my blue velvet armchair in the kitchen, probably sipping something hot. I reflect on the past year, flip through notes of inspiration, welcome ideas, and ask myself questions.

It boils down to, “What do I want in my life this year?”

Because I’m me :), I begin by sketching stick figures with colorful pens, writing on paper, adding exclamation marks, and underlining key ideas.

Inviting creativity and possibility to the page also invites doubter voices inside me.  They snicker and scoff:

“That’s ridiculous.”

“If it was that easy, why didn’t you do that last year?”

“Ha, yeah, right.”

I acknowledge and push through the - often mean - voices, countering with the grounding sentiments of:

“I can.”

“I will.”

“I know.”

“I want to.”

Turning up the volume on the possible sounds like:

“Look what I accomplished last year!”

“Of course I can.”

“I know how to do this.”

“I’m a fucking rock star.”

“I’ll get help; I’ll figure it out.”

I charge ahead.

Following the armchair sessions, I transition back to my desk. I’ve done the work of putting down the vision; now it's a matter of how.

The plan.

How am I going to do this?

What do I need to do differently?

How will I chart my progress?

What kind of help do I need?

And, suddenly, as if conjured from thin air:

I’ve got a plan!

I post it on my wall. I organize my days and weeks accordingly - engaged in my challenging, audacious, and glorious journey.

So, here’s a shout-out to the brave souls I have the honor of working with this quarter. Here’s a taste of what they want.

  • “I want to get out of bed every morning, excited.”

  • “I want to focus on my family in France and finish my book.”

  • “I want to double my revenue and stop showing up “small” in my marriage.”

  • “I want to find an investor and re-work my business model.”

  • “I want to work with three mid-sized marketing agency clients a quarter.  And write a book.”

Powerful shit.  Woo hoo!

A Question for you

How about you?  What do you want?

Let it rip - summon the courage and create an audacious future for yourself.  You got this.

Personal & professional news

Personal

In case we haven’t connected in a while, I’m in a new season.

My bestie Dahlia helped coin the term “Freedom House,” a brainstormed term to replace the pathetic-sounding “empty nest.”

Yes, the kids have flown to college, and I’m living alone in my glorious house in Cold Spring, NY, for the first time in 25 years.

If I had to choose one thing that Freedom House is all about, it would be constantly asking myself, "What do I want?” and then diving in.

After 25 years of marriage and childrearing, I fell out of practice. Perhaps you have as well…

What do I want?

Want to do.

Want to be.

Want to think about.

Want to happen.

Freedom House is micro-moments.

This morning, I had French toast and bacon with a glorious maple butter spread. Knowing I needed the outdoors yesterday, I donned three layers and walked in frigid winter winds. Just this second, I popped downstairs and turned up the heat.

I am writing this now, my conception of how I want to reach out.

What’s up, buttercup?” is how I want to do it.

And you know what?  Recognizing and acting on moment-to-moment “wants” adds further to the bold and audacious wants for my life and business.

Business

What do I want?

I want to help business leaders through scary, exhilarating, challenging-as-fuck change.

I want to reach more people through my book, A Million Reasons Why You Can’t, and offer deep one-on-one coaching.

Oh, the freeing process of expressing fears and truths out loud and on paper -so important.

And when it’s time, isn’t doing something hard, scary, and exhilarating better if the right people are helping?

Of course, it is.

I’m working through some thrilling, terrifying, and exhilarating challenges, too.  I’m in a coaching program with Sarah Leslie - a therapist turned life/business coach powerhouse.  I’m wrestling (aren’t we all?) with the innocuous-sounding word “mindset.”

You know what? With the accumulated wisdom of my 55-year-old self,

I know “mindset” is nothing less than everything.

A “holy shit Todd did this!” Short video story (3:22)

So hey, in the fantastic world of “holy shit, I did this!” here’s a quick story from a 2024 coaching client, Todd.  My favorite line comes towards the end. I ask him how he feels now that he sold his business, and he flatly states, “It feels amazing not to be doing what I hate daily.”

Right on. Here’s to not doing what you hate. And to your next season.

Drop the mic, Todd; I’m thrilled for you.

Stay in Touch

I’ve got one coaching spot available for this quarter- so reach out for a conversation if you are ready to do some scary, exciting, and fierce shit.

I now welcome the spotlight (a book reference - and still sweating). Doing a podcast, retreat, or conference? I’d love to participate.

So, Buttercup, tell me, "What’s up? " Drop me a note, or let's spend time together. I’d love to hear from you.

Love,

Katrina
